Real Z28 RS?

New to Camaros but not new to classics. I’ve come across a 1970 Z28 RS I’m interested in but the cowl tag is making me a bit nervous. All the body, trim, interior checks out as far as I can tell. (Bumper, grill, parking lights, steering wheel). But the cowl tag has been painted over and looks almost purposefully worn down. I’ve added photo of VIN as well for reference.
Other things I’d like to confirm, were all 1970 Z28’s a Muncie M20 4 speed and 12 bolt?
Any advice would be very appreciated.

The cowl tag looks like it was sanded or blasted or something. That's too bad because it would be helpful in identifying the car as a Z28.
Z28s that year would have a 12 bolt rear, either 3.73 or 4.10. Not all Z28s had a Muncie 4 speed. They could be ordered with a TH400 if you wanted an automatic.
Look for the other Z28 clues. Does the engine stamp match the VIN? The transmission will also have a matching VIN. Does it have the Z28 8000 rpm tach and the floor mounted gas pedal? Also, it should have two small "fangs" under the rear bumper. The RS trim is no help in identifying a Z28 as RS could be ordered on any car including a Z28.

Very helpful Gary I appreciate it.
It is a 4 speed but I’ll ask for engine/trans stamp.
I’ll have to ask for some better photos to check on the speedo and gas pedal as well. The pic I have that I’ve attached, the steering wheel just blocks out the bottom of the speedo, though maybe you can tell if it’s still correct? Bumper fangs are a check.
Is a value question appropriate here? Assuming it is what he claims, and there’s no further claims of original paint or upholstery. Just drivetrain and a later restoration. $60k? If this isn’t the place for that question my apologies I’ll take it elsewhere. I also understand value is a matter of opinion. “It’s worth what someone will pay for it” has often been my answer.

I've asked for all paperwork on it and am waiting to hear back. I would think that would be part of the listing though if he did. I just feel like the cowl tag being in the shape its in, and right in the important spot, is suspect. I just really love the damn car or I wouldn't bother.

It sure seems to check the boxes. If the numbers on the block pad match the serial number then you’re most likely in good shape. However, I agree the cowl tag is an area of concern.

The speedometer looks right to me, but I can't see it well. The fangs are on the rear bumper so that is good. The steering wheel isn't a 70 wheel, but a later one.

Thanks all. Ill get the numbers off the drivetrain and go from there. Hopefully it all checks out and I'll be coming back here to join the proud owners club.

If you sanded the tag flat, wouldn't it then have holes in it, considering the letters are stamped from the backside?
To get it flat like this, it would require a hammer or something beating on it.
It being a Norwood Car, Z28 should be stamped on it, correct? If not, no Z.
Take a pencil and scribble over a piece of paper, over the tag, any raised portion should transfer lead to the paper.
Maybe a Z27, which could also have the 12 bolt and Muncie.
Are the lower control arm aluminum spacers there?

Funny I was going to ask for him to do the ol Indiana Jones trick on the cowl tag already.
I’ll be speaking with him tomorrow for more info.
