Is it necessary to have the return fuel line? The car no longer has the original carb but instead an Edelbrock 650cfm carb. I was thinking about putting an Edelbrock fuel pump on to match the carb but it doesn’t have a return. Thanks!

Not necessary but beneficial, it keeps the supply of fuel cooler. I think you can still get the GM fuel pump with the return on it from GM, AC Delco #40777. AC Delco 40777 Fuel Pump.jpg

I have a supercharged small block chevy in my 1979 Z-28 Camaro .It has a modified Holley 830 vacuum carb ,Holley NASCAR type fuel pump with fuel pressure regulator .I also have a return line off my fuel log .to keep the fuel cooler . GM did certain stuff for a reason .So might as well take advantage of it.And there are ways to use it in a non stock application.

Not necessary, but a return does have benefits in a mechanical setup, that's for sure.

Incorporating the return and regulator after the carb has additional advantages, many ways to design the return.

It can help with when you have a heat soaking issue, or a fuel smell issue as well. I put a "T" right at the carb, and "orificed" it back into the return line. They also make in-line fuel filters with a return line nipple on it, (much like the picture of the fuel pump above.)
