S10-Blazer rear disc conversion

A comprehensive list of what needs to be done to go from factory rear drum on a 70-81 Camaro to 98-04 S10-Blazer rear disc.

Once finished you will have an 11.6" rotor with aluminum 1-piston calipers that are staggered to clear the factory shocks. The backing plates bolt right on to the factory rear end housing with no modifications and the parking brake is a shoe inside the rotor hat. The brakes clear the factory 15" 5-spoke steel wheels with no problems. I am assuming they also clear other 15" wheels.

This stuff can be found at your local parts store, ebay, GM dealer, gmpartsdirect.com, rockauto.com, etc. or even a salvage yard.

My total cost was cheap since I used salvage parts. My only new parts were rotors, Hawk pads, Vette master and Summit prop valve for about $160. It was $275 for all the salvage parts, so grand total was about $435. You will be looking at more like $500 going all new.

Please sticky. I will post up more info later on, but this is at least a start.

Parts you will need:
  • 1 - Driver side 4WD backing plate, e-brake assembly (GM PN-15064302)
  • 1 - Passenger side 2WD backing plate, e-brake assembly (GM PN-15773309)
  • 8 - 3/8 bolts, lock washers and nuts to mount backing plate to rear housing
  • 3/8 washers to shim the backing plate for perfect fitment of the caliper to rotor (2 each bolt in my case)
  • 2 - Driver side 4WD caliper, or passenger side 2WD caliper, mix & match (Loaded kit w/ brackets & pads Cardone PN-164712) (Loaded kit w/ brackets & pads NAPA PN-TS 1422228)
  • 2 - Caliper brackets - if needed
  • 1 - Brake pad set - if needed (HWK-HB305Y-610)
  • 4 - caliper bracket bolts (GM PN-15726460)
  • 2 - banjo bolts (GM PN-10286122)
  • 2 - 2WD Blazer rotors (NAPA 4886725) (Powerslot 8638PSL & 8638PSR)
  • 1 - Master cylinder (80 disc/disc T/A, 79 disc/disc Vette, 70 manual disc/disc Vette all work)
  • 2 - Brake hoses (you can use stock Blazer hoses or any braided stainless ones with a 10mm banjo fitting)
  • 1 - Prop valve (stock 80 T/A works, I used a Summit adjustable)
  • New style brake cable (I used the Blazer cables, but Lokar universal would be less work)
  • Brake fluid, gear oil, axle seals

Outside diameter: 11.61"
Height: 2.87"
Thickness: .79"
Mounting face to friction surface: 2.08"
E-brake surface diameter: 7.5"

Aluminum
Single 1.875" piston

Thanks for the write up. I have some of the parts already but do you know the part # for the caliper brackets or a loaded caliper that comes with them? Thanks.

Both calipers PNs provided above are loaded with the brackets and pads.

Thanks for the great info in this post, i already started gathering parts for the swap, but what did u use for the rear lines? not ebrake but to the calipers

My buddy who got the opposite-staggered rear said the single rubber hose to the whole rear was standard and all he had to do was thread it in. The hose at the caliper I had was metric, so I cut my line and re-flared it with a metric fitting. Later on I replaced the hose and the replacement for a 2000 Blazer was standard thread, so you can get away without converting your lines to metric, just have to do some work to figure out which one. If you get a PN let me know and I'll post it up in the instructions.
