SBC Engine build for kicks

Well, GM did not "wonder" about some of the advantages, hence why they did not design a "long" stroke/low rpm engine for the new C8 - z06. They actually went with the "over-squared" architecture for many good reasons.

With a 4.100 bore x 3.15 stroke, light weight/cross plane crank, light/long rods, light pistons with thin metric rings, "Tunnel ram" length tuned runners, dry sump and solid valve train.....all in a 333 cube package, see a trend LOL.

Hitting 2hp per cube and 1.38 tq per cube in a N/A pump gas application is something, the 2,100 rpm peak spread with that geared multi speed trans is so sweet. I drove a C8's, but not the Z06.

If I could shove a 8 spd paddle DCA in my Camaro I would LOL,, but I would lose that "feel" of the manual, but it would be awesome on the road course I bet.......
I think they did wonder. Otherwise they wouldn't have put it in their flagship car. I wasn't necessarily asking which design was making more power, I was, and am, wondering which would have more power and the same longevity. For myself. Considering each design stresses different components. Also, the trade offs with the power curve are another thing I'm interested in.

I am not concerned with whether or not an oppositely built engine can make the same power. I know it can. I want to know why.

We used to run Ti rods and valves in our oval track engines. Small lightweight cranks with Honda journals, which made the rods even lighter. About 700 hp with 360 CI, 9.5:1 compression and single 4 bbl carb, which were the CI, carb and compression rules, but everything else was open. 8500 RPM all day long - 200 laps....

I'm doing a 400 block, 327 stroke crank, titanium rods, ti valves build.

Big heads and cam to be decided.

Maybe AFR 227s. Solid roller obviously.

Probably a Dominator carb single plane intake.

Custom lightweight pistons.

Most likely going to use in front of a Clutch Turbo trans.
Very interesting idea, love SBCs that wind to the moon! Here's an example I found on Youtube;

The 400 sbc with a 3.25 crank setup reminds me of the old Chevy 348 W engine that had a smaller bore. Those old 348's with the right cam and springs could spin to the moon. All of the 348's had a super long connecting rod at the time which helped the bore/stroke ratio. This de-stroked 400 also reminds me of what Reher Morrison did in the late 70's with a BBC and putting a 3.25 348 crank in that engine in P/S, it worked out really well. The down side to the 348 was crappy cyl heads and added weight being a BB type engine. Will be interesting to see what Jakes combo makes. Looking forward to seeing the results.

Just an update,
Dart and Brodix blocks are currently not out there, but my machinist has a 55mm roller cam bearing clock I may use.

Ti valves arrived, AFR 227 heads are ordered with 55 cc chambers.

I went back and forth about carb, Domiantor or 4150 and decided on 4150, so got a Trick Flow intake already. I'll probably just call Pro-Systems and have them spec a carb for E85.

In my day, the low-buck trick was a clean 400 2-bolt block, a 400 crank offset ground to the small-journal pre-68 327 rods to get a budget 427.

Found a 4.00 bore 350 main Dart block, so bought it and we'll punch it out to 4.125. Cam is ordered. .800ish lift, last one in the back page bottom of catalog for duration. :D [email protected] on the exhaust.
I'll get pistons coming, spec sheet is filled out.

Should be interesting.
Nice find. Is it possible to take the 4" Dart blocks out to 4.125? Maybe it's a different model, but when I was looking for one, I thought u could get a 4" version and a 4.125"

Yes, it will go to 4.165".
Probably the same casting but can be ordered closer to desired finish bore.
