Heck just brining up this thread reminds me of how many times I have read it and thought about going to a higher gear. I'm thankful for overdrives so I can have my cake and eat it too.

 

I like old threads also but I like numbers even more..here are a few to chew on.

1978 Nova STOCK 305" 2 barrel with dual pipes or single it would get 18 MPG Recurved the distributor and it went quicker and still got 18 MPG.
I later stuck a 350" into it with 268H cam and ported and milled 624heads 72cc chambers still running the 2.56 rear gears.
18 MPG.
Switched to a 308 rear gear and 400-600 over stock stall converter and recalibrated the speedometer with a gear change.
20.5 MPG best and 18 with spirited driving tossed in.
The 305" never got 20.5 always 18 MPG.

The .308 gear and the converter would pull from a stop much easier with less throttle it seemed.
Not lugging around basically.

I later got tired of breaking rerends and went 9" and had 2.29 and many other gears.
I was running 3.70 gears and pulling 15 mpg with lots of RPM and spirited driving tossed in.
I thought heck how about some 2.29 gears for a long trip I was going to do often.

I swapped in the gears and my MPG went to 8 !
Yes eight mpg.
It hit me before I went through another tank of fuel..My timing was all in around 2200 RPM.
I was cruising the highway at way under that.
I had to really tweak the distributor to get my curve all in by the low cruise RPM 30" tall tires and 2.29 gears were giving me.

I ended up getting 18 MPG once dialed in.
That was with ported and milled to 54cc #186 casting heads and 270H comp cam in the 350".

Pulling my small boat down the highway with the 2.29 gears and my 31x10.5 x15 tires and a hot rod Olds pulled beside me at 70 MPH and racked his pipes.
HA! sucker . I dropped into first gear in the TH350 and it was on. 6500 in first then shift.
Run to 5500 in second and it just quit pulling RPM and I was looking at his back seat.
I shift to third and about a second later my car is in front of him and walking away.
He gave up.
Gears did not hurt my MPG that much really. But they did allow me to drive faster and get the same or close to the same MPG.

 

10.5-1 sbc 355. Worked 492 heads. Xe 268 cam. 14 degrees Initial. 3.42 rear and a 4 speed. Hwy is 15-17 mpg

 

Sad to report we lost one of my best friends on the planet at the end of February of this year. RIP Sy
