So, what is the least expensive way to install a 200 r4 in an 81?

I'm wanting to do this swap but have been told several times the 200 won't survive behind even the mildest 350 without having it professionally built. The best man for the job charges over $4k to build it but guarantees it won't fail.

I've been told that several times too but, I know people have done it. Twisted metal has one in his car but, I don't know what his engine is. I'm pretty sure it's a stalker close to stock 350. I wish he and others would chime in on your post. I'd like to know their opinions.

I did chime in very early in this thread.

My engine is a bottom of the line crate 350.
There were no heavy duty parts installed and I've driven over 60K miles with no problem.

I have never put slicks on the car for hard launches at a track either.

Mine was built by JakeShoe's shop well over a decade ago. I believe he no longer sells 200-4R transmissions.

He said mine would handle 300 HP without mods.

If you're going for much more than that... I suggest getting one from a competent outfit who will build one to your specs. Especially if you're planning on racing it.

They aren't cheap but they work extremely well in a 2nd gen.

My son was so impressed with it that he pulled a perfectly good TH350 out of his car and installed a 200-4R too. (I don't recall where he got his but that has been a decade ago too.)

They are an excellent trans with great gearing, and totally worth paying up to have one built properly for your needs. In stock form they are not very strong.
