Sound like the video card to you?

The boy is telling me his screen will shake, move around, go black and other weird stuff. I saw it shift the whole screen left and then right, black out and come back on.

I hate to shotgun it but my diagnostic skills on computers are just above medieval. Does it sound like the card may be giving up the ghost?

First guess would be the cable is loose on one end. Maybe shake the display to see if it acts up.

It almost has to be the video card, the monitor, or the cable connecting them. If you have another computer available, try a different monitor to eliminate that. Buying new parts before swapping usually costs more money to fix than it should cost.

I updated the drivers but that didn't have any real impact. I hung the monitor on the wall for him and noticed it doesn't see the cable (scrolls across the screen there is no DVI cable) at times when I moved it. The connections are tight and I don't get any change messing with the ends, but if I wiggle the cable I get the missing cable scroll. A smart man would have wiggled the cable while the computer was running but I didn't think of that until just now :( I'll do that when I get home. I believe I have another cable.
