speedo gear removal....forever.

Good morning all. I have been trying to find the seal for the end of the speedo gear housing to replace it. I do not run a speedometer in my car so the leak has been annoying to say the least for a portion of the transmission that I do not even utilize. While inspecting, I removed the large housing that the gear sits behind and realized I have a plus that will fit inside the housing perfect to block off the hole where the speedo gear sites. only issue, I can not place the speedo gear back in the housing when I install the plug. Can I put the housing back into the transmission without the speedo gear without causing a mechanical issue with the gear that the speedo gear mates to?

If I have to reinstall it I will, but at this point, my leak is fixed, if I don't have to, I'd rather not considering I don't use the speedo anyhow. Thanks all! Look forward to the answer.

I think I understand what you are stating.....This is what you need. No need to remove gears. Unscrew your odometer cable, tie it up under your chassis somewhere with a baggie rubber banded over the exposed cable end, and install this cap. This cap was used on a 4 speed. Is yours auto or manual? Both may be the same. No leaks.......

The gear inside the trans. does not need the driven gear.

The driven gear sleeve could be drilled & tapped for a bolt or plug.

Or the outside is probably 7/8-14; maybe you can find a cap.

I appreciate it. As of now I still have the gear removed. I wouldn't mind putting it back in. I'll see if I can find a cap. 7/8-14 may be an interesting find. I'll take a look though.

As far as removing the speedo cable and securing it, I don't even have one. I have an aluminum bead rolled dash, I don't have a speedometer in the car. haha. "Do you know how fast you were going? - Uh....3200 RPM officer?" haha

Just don't ever admit to an officer that you are knowingly operating a vehicle with a non-functioning or disconnected speedometer. It falls under odometer fraud which is a federal crime.
