It goes between the transmission and speedometer cable
Does it screw directly on the transmission, or is there a cable in between? It goes between the transmission and speedometer cable.
Thank you!Yep... It should just screw directly to the transmission.

I do have that plastic sleeve on there, thanks! That is a "speedometer ratio adapter" box. The ratio should be stamped on a cast pad for such. Possibly an identifying letter code, too.
The speedometer cable attaches to the male end.
I don't recall on if it was the input or output side of the box, BUT a thin opaque-white plastic sleeve will slide into the one end, with a longitudinal tang on it. Then the squared-end of the cable slides into that before the outer nut is tightened. That little sleeve is a more secure way of keeping the cable secured so it will not turn (from wear) in its mating-piece. So if the cable end does not match the adapter box receptacle, you need one of the plastic sleeves. They were available in GM parts back then and in the Chevy parts book. Usually came 10 to a package.
Without that obscure sleeve, nothing works. In some cases, the sleeve is not needed as the "mating part" has the longitudinal tang made into the metal mating part.
Just some thoughts,
