The government knew about it's existence far before the public heard about it. if they wanted to shoot it down they would have done it already. My best assumption is the encryption on it is terrible and we're just looking at what it's sending back.

I would think the authorities want to bring it down as undamaged as possible so it can be studied.

As for the threat and the approach to it right now, there is no way the U.S. military/ govt is sitting there wringing their hands in indecision as some would have u believe.
They know what's in it, what its receiving, what its sending and they probably know what nobody has mentioned... that it is a Houdini-style distraction for whatever it is they are really doing at the moment.
