A friend of mine with a 68 Impala with 600 horse, had one done locally by " the best guy around" slipped the first time out, i think 🤔 i am going to try a more well known place like Mikes or Rossler with some recommendations

a 700 hp capable TH400 is a no brainer any decent local transmission shop with a decent rep. can tackle that.

Ive seen many stock TH400 with only a budget shift kit survive 700 hp and about 550-600 tq
sure it can, even a th350 will if you drive it like a sane person , but who could do that with 700+hp LOL.

I sprayed 300 nitrous on top of a 550hp 468 BBC for numerous years through a TH400. built by Jakes Performance , its was fairly cheap , a little less than 1900$.

No frills , just what you need.

That's awesome! there's no doubt that Jakes Performance built quality units.
I wouldn't call it no frills though, I'm pretty sure that some parts on that transmission is massage/drilled/replaced.
Also are you spraying in stages or all at once?

Single stage , but I tweaked with longer lines so it was a softer hit since we were traction limited, this was in no prep car/ street race car.

Only 34 element sprag, trans go kit and generic deep pan and big arse RV cooler in front of the rad. Very cheap and simple set up! My engineering capabilities are stuck in the 70s and I love it.

Really not much needed to build a reliable 400 for this power level: just some knowledge and some basic parts:

Rollerized output shaft
4l80 direct drum with 32 element spray
4l80 hub
Dual fed directs
BW Hi-energy frictions everywhere
VB modifications

A local shop should be able to build one for you and warranty it as well.

That is good that it works for you!
Give yourself some credit, sometimes success has a lot to do with the end user as well.
