Anyone know why I can set my timing at 36 total, have the dizzy snug, do the final tightening and the timing jumps 4 degrees...as soon as I tighten it no matter where the timing goes up. New distributor(MSD).

no, In the 110+ heat I'm a little weary of locking it out, hate to be in elims and have it to hot to start.......I know I could and probably will get a better box to retard the timing.....but what the heck, it took us 5 times to finally settle in at 34 degrees

This is just an idea, but your dist may be bottoming on the oil pump drive so when you tighten the dist down it causes the gear to climb changing the timing.

Agreed with above. Put 2 gaskets under the distributor instead of 1 and try again. See if it's any different.
