TKX Conversion kits

what are they charging for the f body console mode? i wonder what the machining is? i figured it was just an offset shifter.
the only issue i see with not using the mod is if it sits to far towards the driver it will come out the side of the trans tunnel and then
building the shifter hump can interfere with how the carpet lays down.

The issues with the TKO 600 and American Powertrain (GM JIM) Were that the transmissions wouldn’t shift at high RPM. They tried to blame installation, clutch , shifting technique and everything else under the sun. Then they said it isn’t a racing transmission. But when I was inquiring about buying it and I explained that I was concerned about having 650 ft lbs of torque and sticky tires they said that I would be fine and that the “600” advertised torque number was underrated and I would be fine. It really sucked trying to get it to shift. I had to spend another $1000 to have it upgraded by Liberty Gear.

Did you dial in your bellhousing?? Really important on the Tremec transmissions... Different type of bearing ( tapered vs Ball? ) on the input shafts from the old 4 speeds....

Hi guys - fairly new member here and I'm also looking to go from a Super T-10 4 speed to a TKX in my '71.

Question for those that went with Silver Sport: Did you opt for the "Silver Sport Transmissions case machining and STX Performance Short Throw offset shifter" to keep the shifter in the factory location and the ability to use the factory console? If you didn't, was the shifter location that far off from factory and/or did you need to modify the console?

I know the TKX is billed as "no modifications needed", but Jeff at Silver Sport said this was needed to keep the OEM shifter location and fit the console in my car.

I would trust what Jeff says, he is an honest guy. My TKO with the silversport mods and STX shifter bolted right in and lined up perfectly with my console. Without the shifter, there is no way it would line up. I'm sure the TKX is the same.

As a follow up to this:

I installed the TKX with the shifter location mods / STX short throw shifter that Jeff recommended. The shifter is in the exact OEM location and fits in the OEM console perfectly. No modifications to the tunnel opening needed.

The only thing I had to change was the Hurst shifter stick. I needed something that swept back 3" more (toward the rear) than what I had on the Super T-10 to locate the shifter handle where I wanted it.

Otherwise, the swap could not be any easier

Excellent! Thanks for the follow up, so glad it worked out. Having that much dough invested makes it nerve wracking.
I found a very reasonable shifter handle on Amazon. Black, aluminum, cool shape to it and worked perfectly. And cheap.

Friggin' shifter sticks / handles handles are pricey!! I want to find a black ball handle with red numbers - going to Amazon now....

I got an email at some point from Silver Sport with an offer for a free shifter ball. I had to email Tremec if I recall correctly, and they mailed me a black tremec 5 speed knob. Very nice.

Yes - Silver Sport charges for shipping. The estimate I received, with shipping charges included, was less expensive than the other places I contacted.

Although for me, it was less about cost and more about communication / knowledge / customer service.

Sure did , after Liberty Gear modified their mods it shifts like it supposed to.

Just put in my order with Silver Sport. Thanks for all the input. Gene is who helped me out and he seems like a good dude.

FYI something I did not know. If you want to use the center console, you have to weld in a little hump so that the shifter can sit up in it and you also have to upgrade to their SST STX short throw shifter. I did this since I want the center console factory look. If you dont care you can just have it come out the floor with a boot.
