The video says it all. The P-63 tracked right into the B-17. That is not accidental.

I can't like this pic as it is terribly disturbing. RIP and Prayers for all.
I read a news brief earlier this morning and officials are wanting Black boxes installed on these old Warbirds . Also more stringent safety inspections and maintenance scheduling

The black boxes seem like a knee jerk reaction. I can't imagine the expense being worth it, even if I thought it were at all practical or realistic. I remember the days when they would discover the cause of the crash before trying to prevent it.
How would you go about adding black boxes....these were mechanical planes.

Almost like they don't know what they're talking about. That, or its their intention to ground these things without explicitly saying it
As noted above by John, I'm not sure black boxes could be integrated into the airframes to provide any tangible data. And I'd love for someone (the officials) to explain how improving maintenance and safety inspections would have prevented this tragedy.
I would bet that those old birds are far better maintained by more dedicated techs than any commercial plane.
We usedmto use an old section of runway for motorcycle training, and nearby there was a vintage hangar with military planes in it. There were vintage techs maintaining them, and they were some of the smartest most dedicated professionals I have met. They loved those planes.

Same down here. The war plane museum just down the road from me has all manner of retired military and airline mechanics and engineers taking care of our planes, and if you know those type of guys, they really give the planes the belt and suspenders treatment.
