Can these be taken out and replaced without breaking it? If so how?

It's easier to replace the vent assembly than to attempt to repair them.
The reason those slats are wonky is because the pieces that the pins snap into get brittle and break.

The repops look great but they aren't cheap.
(You will also need to paint the edge piece to match your interior, if that bothers you.)

There are some blue ones on ebay.
The slats look good but the chrome isn't perfect.

I agree with Twisted. Yes you can probably get it apart, I was able to mine apart and I morphed two assemblies together, but it was touch and go. In hind sight I would buy a functional one and paint to match. If it has a chrome look edge around the vent a “silver leafing” pen from Michael’s or Hobby Lobby will look really good. No artistic skills needed 😬 best of luck.

The housings are just glued together. Take a sharp utility knife and cut along the seams. Then you have to drill out some metal rivets. A Dremel is good for this.

A little trivia. This is another 1970 only item where the vent petals are smooth in 1970 and textured in the following years. The reproductions from OER are textured.
