My 78 was built with the 14x7 rally wheels and they DID have the 6 stainless steel inserts.
(Even though the dealer brochure for that year does NOT show them.) https://nastyz28.com/camaro/1978/78b-2.html

I've noticed the dealer brochure images are often pre-production cars and some detail photos are reused from previous years.

I think the cutover year for the addition of the 6 inserts may have been 78.
That's when the rally wheels were painted to match the body color and the stainless steel inserts made a nice contrast to the wheel color.

What is the largest tires you can put on a 1978 LT 14x7 rally wheel? The 14" rims are a bit small but what came with the car. Id like to fill out the wheel wells a bit more but not so much to have any issues with clearances or look way over sized.

Oh and does anyone know the correct original GM part number for the trim rings?

Thanx guys........... =)

From my 78 Base Coupe build sheet... Factory tire size was FR78x14 WW. (That's equivalent to a 205/75R14.)
I'm pretty sure the 78LT used the same tire size.

I've used 235/60-14 on my 78 all around.
If you want a taller tire you can use the 225/70-14 in front and 235/70-14 in the rear.

My 80 Berlinetta also came with 14" wheels and the build sheet says 205/75x14 WW.

I ran BFG TA Radial 265/50/14 on all 4 corners of my car. There was a lot of sidewall bulge but they looked cool. Also, the centers wear out faster than the rest of the tread because the rim is too narrow.
245/60/14 is 25.6" dia which is close to the 26" stock dia.

205/75/14 is listed as a "trailer tire" on Tire Rack.

I don't think any cars built in the past 25 years actually came with a tire that size so I'm not surprised they have been limited to production for trailers.
There still are a few left that are all season but yeah most of them are trailer tires. Before pro touring when it was just herb Adams and guys like that messing with our cars I remember cars with 235 60 s with a lot of air and in them doing quite well around the track

Im pretty sure 235/70/14 cant be found so it looks like 235/60/14 is the way to go. The 265/50/14 recommend a min of 7.5" on the rim width and unfortunately the rims I have are 14x7.

I can get a 225/70/14 redline that might look pretty shape. Were the redlines originally installed on these vehicles?
