Can it be this bad? New computer to replace the win7 desktop the wife uses. HP 270 from Wallyworld. Plugged in about 1;30 this afternoon, now almost 10pm and still watching it update and trying to get it setup. We use a Canon laser printer, almost cost more than the computer, and it seems that it won't work with windows 10, or the puter just won't recognize it. This is crazy. I'm not the smartest guy around, but I'm not that dumb either. How can there be that many updates to a brand new computer, box was dated 12/2/17. Hope Walmart is in a good mood tomorrow, I'm 90% ready to take it back. Serious money for this piece of crap. Whew, rant over.

I think some security updates were pushed out as there were open doors into the system. I've got a 10 based computer I got as a gift from work. I also have two older units running 7 and 8. The older computers I retired were better but Microsoft won't support older versions as they can't sell new ones if they do.

Had to get on the laptop to even log in to the nasty here, two hour update that has the browser locked up for uploads I guess. Used to be getting a new computer was fun, sure not this time around.

Even a new computer won't have up to date versions of the software. Microsoft has a stock version of Win10 just like they had a basic version of all other operating systems. It gets installed on a new computer and then, all updates after that have to be applied to get it up to today's version. The system on a new computer is likely the same one released years ago when Win 10 was invented and released originally.
So, just power it up, connect it to the internet, and let it run. By tomorrow the operating system should be up to date and then you can chase down drivers you might need for any of your existing hardware.
As far as your printer, check with the printer manufacturer for an up to date one. Most likely they have it. You can't expect the operating system to find it. You should however be able to find it yourself. And, as a last resort if there is no Win 10 driver, you can often force feed Windows 10 a Windows 7 driver that should work. Microsoft likes to fight you on this because it isn't specifically written for 10, but in the end you only care that it works, not that Microsoft is happy with it.

Windows 10 is fine. It works as well as any previous version did. Listen to Gary.

Go to Canon's site and get updated drivers for your printer.

I will say Dell doesn't work well with 10. My wife has an all-in-one desktop that drops its wireless connection occasionally. It also shows it to be in Airplane Mode (a desktop, mind you) and Dell has no fix for it.

Maybe your computer manufacturer is having issues. Oh, and hours of an update is a sign of network issues...on your end.

And I can't go to any url without going through a Bing search, had to use laptop to get into my router even. And can't bypass or remove Bing. Finally finished updates at about 3 am last night, and can't seem to disable automatic updates either. Canon did have a driver for the printer and MS has a scanner program, haven't tested that yet. Android devices are starting to look pretty good.

I almost never use Bing. You can add any browser you want to. And there are tricks and mods to make it what you want it to be. Just takes a little effort. In this case, Google is your friend.

I'm guessing your using Internet Explorer as your browser or worse, Edge. Stop doing that. Go download Google Chrome and use that as your browser. Sure you can change your default search engine in IE or Edge but why bother.
About updates, you will not be able to turn off updates in win 10. You can defer them but not indefinitely. Get used to your new life. Once you've updated your machine, you'll now get new updates every month on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
It sounds like you've got your scanner and printer drivers sorted out. Remember you can always go to the mfc site for drivers but MS is trying to be more active with making drivers available via Windows Update.
Try and be patient while its updating, this will be a one time thing.
