I'm a fan of Windows 10. I'm not sure why it gets all the negative crap it does. My son put together a new computer yesterday. New motherboard, processor, memory and video card. We re-used the hard drives. I figured we would likely have to reinstall everything, go through the update crap etc. I was surprised when we fired it up Windows took a couple of minutes and had it all figured out. All we had to do was sign into his Microsoft account to validate.

I've tried this with 98, XP and 7 and it never worked for me. I'm impressed.

I got mine through the free update from 7 on my Toshiba satellite. No problems really after my getting used to the lay out. One thing is I can't turn off the notifications selectively. I keep getting the M/S acct problem that I just don't care about. My H/D croaked and had to get a new one. Lucky I had an external drive to save to. Everything came back just not the way I had it arranged before. My wife bought me an Apple to replace my Toshiba but I don't like it so I stuck with the Toshiba. The Apple just sits waiting. 10 is Good for me.

The company I work for gave me a gift a few years back for 40 years of service. Previously they gave gift cards but 2 months before my anniversary, they went to a gift catalog. I didn't really need another laptop but it was either that or a set of golf clubs. I consider golf to be just a reason to wear ugly clothes. It works okay but Microsoft cut content again with it. I use it as a back up system if something happens to my regular computer. You're right in that it works okay but takes some getting used to.

I think what most people dislike about Win 10 is the update policy. Its enforced by Microsoft and they have a track record of rushing out OS updates. Often times this will cause a lot of problems until the next cycle of updates. And you can't turn off the updates to prevent this from happening. So often times users will lose functionality that they had prior to an update and sometimes for months on end. Only 3 versions allow you to manage these and only 1 is available to the general public. Win 10 Pro is you're wondering. But even with those versions of Win10, after a certain time limit you're forced to update even if there is no fix for anything it might break.
Also even then updates can change a driver and then you can lose functionality and spend more time troubleshooting devices that worked just fine prior to the OS breaking things. Its the main reason people are withholding from upgrading to Win 10.

The other thing people tend to dislike is the built in adware and shovelware that is integrated into the start menu. Then you have to lock down its little helper software so it doesn't run constantly and report your activity and location information to MS and other 3rd party vendors.
As it stands now its cool but it needs a lot of work and more than that, it needs MS to change several company policies. SAS is a terrible business model for the consumer. If those 3 things were removed or improved it would be a spectacular OS. Upgrade to PRO!! :)

On a side side note, if you want to upgrade to 10 for free, a lot of people are reporting that the free upgrade tool still works for them. https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

You CAN turn off automatic Win 10 updates.
Not really.* More to the point gone are the days of trusting/using in Windows Update to manage your updates. Most end users don't have the technical know how to disable updates and then manage them responsibly on their own.

*unless you want to completely disable all updates entirely by disabling it in services or editing the registry. If you do this you will need to manually download and install any and all updates you want, because as soon as you enable the service ALL updates will be pushed and installed.

This seems to stop it. Am I missing something?

And why would you NOT want to update the operating system?
