Wix is Chinesium now. Already hearing stories of reduced quality.
Not all of them. Mann-Hummell acquired Wix some time ago. They're operating the original Wix manufacturing plant in Gastonia, NC that still produces a LOT of filters and from what I've been told by people who work there, the quality of workmanship and materials has not changed...but they can only speak for the Gastonia plant. They also have manufacturing plants in Canada, South America, Europe and China.

And you do not need an anti-drainback valve oil filter when the filter is mounted vertically.
I respectfully disagree.

GM changed that line of thinking as well. Their engineering teams are far more capable than I.

Final iterations of SBC (i.e. iron block iron head vortec V8 RPO L30, L31 as well as V6 4.3 iron block iron head) have filter mounted vertically as did previous iterations; and a filter with ADBV is specified for those final iterations.

Of course, one can use a filter with or without ADBV; owners' prerogative.
But the latest SBC has specified a filter with ADBV. It's also slightly smaller in diameter than prior filters and has an 18X1.5mm thread; instead of prior filters' 13/16-16 thread.

It seems many LS V8 also have vertically-mounted filters; a filter with ADBV is specified for those as well, although those have a 13/16-16 thread.

It's a sad truth that some, but certainly not all, WIX oil filters are made in China. CoO is specified on the label.

I once had the unfortunate "honor" to change O&F on a 1983 Mazda RX7 with rotary power.
Its spin-on filter was also mounted vertically. However it was mounted atop motor with its thread and openings on BOTTOM. That's one messy POS!

Do the VW engineers expect you to punch a hole in the top and suck the oil out before you unscrew it?

I would guess pre-filling a filter for that car is pretty much out of the question too.
