Ok better question for you. What is the assembly date on the pad of the motor? The manifolds were installed when the engine was assembled at the tonawanda plant. Not on the assembly line. The cast date on the manifolds will need to be before the engine assembly date to be original to the motor. If they are later to the assembly date. They are not original to the motor. They could have been changed for some reason. Are you the original owner of the car?

My 1968 Norwood Z/28 was fitted with smog pump and tubes from the factory. If you don’t have the holes for the tubes then someone changed the manifolds.

That’s an interesting point. I’m not the original owner. The 396 is a CE block, with a cast date December 1970. I believe the rest of the motor, (heads, crank, intake etc…) are original to the car due to the cast dates. Since the block itself was replaced, I would imagine that the rest of the motor, including the exhaust would just be reassembled. I do not have any information on how warranty replacements were done. It was sold new at Bill Barnett Chevrolet in Compton, Ca, which more than likely completed the work on the motor.

The manifolds have the openings for the tubes, but they were removed and plugged years ago.

Do you have the protecto plate for the car. It should have the assembly date and engine suffix on it? Also the cylinder head cast dates if original will give you a close time line of the original block.

Looks like my 77 Z28 4-spd that I ordered new did not have smog.

My 80 Z28 had it but I can’t remember if my 78 Z28 came with it since I didn’t take a photo.
