I believe it was in January 1974 when they changed over.

I believe COPO is correct. I have a 04B ‘74 and it has the points dist. There’s a poster here with a 04C ‘74 and his has HEI. So it appears the changeover happened sometime the week starting April 15, 1974. (Just after mine was built)

You are correct. People keep circling around the Jan 1974 month. Just because Chevy deceided they would make the change to HEI in January DOES NOT mean it's going to happen that moment, there is remaining stock to be used up before it happens.
