I have a 3" x-pipe exhaust system with flowmaster mufflers 40 series, Is it the x pipe that is making the raspy sound between 2-3 thousand RPMS? how would it sound if I went to an H-pipe and eliminated the x-pipe? it's a 70 Camaro 350 with AFR heads, hooker super comp headers,

I got a 79 z with a 350, summit headers and glasspacks, with pypes xpipes inbetween, all 2.5 respectfully and i like them. Each type of pipe has a different use, between manifold pipes (2 to 1 down), x pipes, H pipes and straight pipes. From my understanding and i could be wrong but H pipes were the original x pipes. Do reseach and find what u like best. Here are some help pages

I wouldn't blame the x-pipe, maybe the blowmasters? I have 2.5" pypes violators with an x pipe on my T/A 487 CI with Hooker full length headers and mine isn't raspy at all.

X-pipes actually smooth out the exhaust tone compared to divorced duals. I'll bet it's the mufflers.

X pipes produce a higher pitched almost indy car type of sound. They tend to reduce or eliminate the raspy sound of certain mufflers and reduce the sound level.

Here is my car for example. 1 7/8" super comps into 3" exhaust with small 12" length Borla sportsman mufflers and an X pipe. It dumps at the diff. This is WAYYYYYYYYY quieter than it used to be with the straight exhaust and flowmaster 40 series and also when i had bullet mufflers. You can talk comfortably in the car now.

It's caused from the resonance frequency of something in the exhaust. Either a length of pipe, the muffler, etc.

When the frequency (tone) of the exhaust matches the resonance of another piece in the exhaust system it causes odd noises to occur. It's actually very similar to how any wind instrument works.

Have you ever heard of resonators? That's what they're for.
