Z28 or not?

After seaching for awhile for a decent camaro to play with I found one. 1978 Z28, Has all the correct exterior components..hood, fenders, wheels and interior badges, gauges but now having doubts its a real Z, also has T-tops but trim tag says hard top. Was the t top code on the trim tag? other wise im happy with he car, minimal rust interior great shape, built 400 small block.. According to trim tag built in Norwood, I payed $9000

T tops will likely not be on the trim tag of a '78 model as Chevy didn't start using the Fisher T top until 1979. the '78 models would likely have the Hurst tops and many of them were added aftermarket.
The trim tag will however show the Z28 option. On a Norwood car, it plainly states "Z28". On a Van Nuys car, it has only an "8" to identify a Z28. Look for those codes to know.

I would post a pic of the trim tag and let us know all but the last six digits of the VIN.

I don't know a whole lot about decoding later 2nd gens, but the fifth digit in the VIN is an 8. I would think that's a good sign as it identifies the engine code as a 350. I don't know of any 2nd gens that were Z28s with a 305.

As far as the trim tag, it looks like there's damage right where the tag would identify Z28. I would let others chime in about that.

Do you have a build sheet? Have you looked for one yet? That may help.

Who would do such a thing to a tag unless they were hiding something. In 1981 the Z28 for California was a 305. I laughed at that when I was trying to sell my 80 Z28 that I ordered new.

The messed up area of the cowl tag is the location where the Z28 identification would be. That suggests that someone was trying to hide the fact that it isn't a Z28.

Is that spot normally blank on non z cars? Maybe someone was trying to stamp Z28 in that spot
