Same question regarding two vehicles: (1) 70 SS350 Camaro, and (2) a Studebaker with a 74 400 ci Malibu engine. Both have Rochester Quadrajet carbs. Am replacing fuel lines and fuel filters. Have the filters, but they didn't come with the two (O-shaped) gaskets needed to install them. One is about the size of a quarter and is used to seal the nut/fitting that holds the filter to the carb itself. The other is about the size of a dime and goes between the fitting and the carb chamber that the filter lives in.

I have a parts book and have the original GM part numbers (7024281 and 7032508), but they're both NLA. I could probably find them on ebay, but here's the question: I have some hydraulic-rated O rings that are the right size. Are they a reasonable substitute?

The large gasket is a nylon gasket. The filters have the smaller gasket on the filter.

Sample of the short one.

Thanks for the quick response. I agree that the filter itself has its own gasket, but that's not the one(s) I'm talking about. Both of the ones I'm trying to replace are nylon and I are actually mounted on the fitting, not the filter. I'd like to know if they can be replaced with O-rings. In the pic from the parts book, number 11 is the fitting, 12 and 13 the gaskets, and 14 is the filter. In the second picture I have attached O-rings to the fitting so they'll show up better.

I’ve never seen a rubber O ring in a Holley or Quad. I would not use it cause it’ll just twist out of shape and not seal. GM would have used them if they thought they would work. Plus rubber needs to be compatible with fuel.

I notice Holley is using nylon gaskets which I wouldn’t use on their fuel bowl mounting bolts and I think even the fuel inlet if you use the bronze hard filter which I don’t bc of the re & re on the 2 fittings.

I am resurrecting this thread to give a shout-out to Cliff's High Performance for great support and help. And thanks to Burd and Sandlapper for recommending him to me.

I struggled with this carb problem off-and-on for most of the summer without being able to stop it from leaking gas. So I sent it to Cliff -- who discovered that the carb body itself was cracked, probably from the filter housing being over-torqued. Whether I did that or the previous rebuilder did that was no longer relevant -- it meant that the carb needed to be replaced.

Cliff also discovered that the previous rebuilder had bent/misaligned/screwed up some of the carb's internals -- so the car wouldn't have run right (or run at all) -- even if the carb hadn't been leaking. He called me several times to update me on progress, and even sent me photos of the damaged parts he removed. He provided me with a completely rebuilt Quadrajet -- and yesterday the car started for the first time in six months. So I highly recommend Cliff's High Performance for Quadrajet carb problems.
