The part that goes on the timing chain cover is the "tab".
There will normally only be a line across the edge of the balancer on a factory balancer.

The aftermarket balancer you pictured is numbered so "0" is where that line would be on a factory balancer.

After cleaning everything up I found the timing tab. I couldn't see it with all the grease on it and it didnt help that it was underneath the water pump. How do I know what kind of engine it is? This whole time ive been under the impression that it was a 350. Ive literally been buying parts for a 350.

Is the line that I circled on the stock balancer supposed to be the 0 mark you're talking about?

When I installed the new one the mark on my balancer has to match up with the 0 mark on the timing tab with the keyway on the shaft in the current position?

I'm in the process of removing the harmonic balancer. My question is, does the new one have to be the exact same diameter? And are the stock ones internally or externally weighted? The one I bought has removable weights.

Here's a link to a quick video. To see if someone more experience is able to tell if my current balancer is bad. I for sure want to change out the crank pulley.

I got the number off my old one and ordered the same one from GM. It ended up being a special order and I had to wait a little while for it, but I got the same one. It had the number 6331 on it.

305s often had the timing mark and timing tab at the 12 o'clock position.

The 305 balancer will fit a 350 crankshaft but you'll never get the timing correct with the
350 timing tab in the normal 2 o'clock position.
Often back in the day we had to cobble parts together and relocate the timing tab marks using a piston stop to locate/confirm TDC and then installing "Timing Tape" to the balancer itself.
That tape was always specific to the diameter of the balancer.

Something looks fishy in the side by side comparison relative to the key way and timing mark. I’d suggest use the old one (shouldn’t have to install all the way, just enough to turn the crank with the plugs out) to position the crank at TDC, the. Check to see if the new one lines up. If not, you could replace the pointer on the timing cover with an adjustable one (from Mr Gasket I think). For new balancers, I prefer the ones with degree scale engraved on the balancer itself).

Forgot to update you guys. I returned the other one and purchased this one instead. Along with a new water pump as well. I'm lucky enough to live about 20 minutes away from Summit Racing.
