Thanks everyone for the input. I frequent the performanceyears website all the time. The consensus over there is that the rears were left unpainted. It's just that I have seen pictures of outstanding restorations on this site, I thought it never hurts to ask. The local chevy guys here in the NYC area insist every rear was painted black. Who knows, maybe it was a Norwood vs. Van Nuys thing. Thanks for all your help and Chuck I'll take you up on your offer to check with your friend.

Frank, I called Eric Thompson yesterday regarding his 5800 mile Norwood 72 Z-28. He reports that his differential housing is painted semi gloss black. He didnt say 100%, but I gather that's what he was implying.
I still have NO idea why Pontiac would have unpainted 12 Bolts and Chevrolet Camaro seems to have painted ALL that I know about????

The rear axle housing was not painted on my 01D 71Z. Everything was bare with green paint dabs on the backing plates and yellow inspection paint on the center housing.

Dennis, I did not realize this about your 71. Your Z-28 has never returned to Carlisle since the LEGENDS judging started. How rusted is your diff ??? and/or how does it LOOK!!!!!!!!!!
Hope we can get more info, plant locations and build dates...........and PICTURES

Thanks,

Chuck, I emailed some pictures to you. I spent many many hours sanding my housing. I then primered and painted with steel paint as I knew there was no way to keep it from rusting without paint. Diff housing is painted cast grey. Black sure would have been easier but I knew it was not correct for my car.

Chuck,
I believe Pontiac only used the 12 bolt rear in 1970. Beginning in 1971 it was a 10 bolt rear. Maybe thats it - the 12 bolts were black and the 10 bolts were raw casting. As I said, the local Chevy guys here in NY insist GM painted the rears black but the more I dig, the more it seems they were left unpainted at least in 1972.
