I will one day inherit my Dad's 81 Camaro that currently has a 305 in it. As a project together we decided to build a 350 together. First time for both of us.
Sorry if I am beating someone's dead horse with a question about engine block and head numbers, but I am a complete newbie and want to make sure I am following the decoding correctly. Also, I did not find my suffix code, TPA??

mortec.com is your best friend.

Block: 14093638

350
87-95
2 or 4 bolt mains
Roller or flat tappet cam (it may have either cam type installed, some of the machine work for roller cam installation may already be done, even if flat-tappet equipped). See photos below. If at all possible, use a roller cam (no tedious break-in).
One-piece rear seal.
It may or may not have a machined mechanical fuel pump mounting boss (with pushrod hole).

Heads: 14096217

(From googling):
Iron heads, centerbolt valve covers. They are 1987+ and feature 72 degree center bolts (the 4 center intake bolts). Valves are 1.94 and 1.5 with 64cc combustion chambers.

Roller lifter 'spider' bosses in lifter valley, these may or may not be drilled and tapped:

Cam retainer bolt holes beside cam hole, at 3 and 9 o'clock:

Some parts from the 305 will not fit (flexplate and oil pan, due to the 1-pc rear main seal). Valve covers due to the centerbolt style on the newer heads. The intake will need some adapting, if the newer heads indeed have the canted middle bolts. Sometimes you can slot the holes in the intake or just use these wedges:

Also, it's an '81. Does it still have the computer and related carb and distributor (for the 305)?

So when I am looking at a site like comp cams would I look at the option for

305-350, 1987-1998, (OE Roller Cam)
or
Small Block 262-400, 1955-1986?

It does have tapped spider bosses. Would this confirm it was a roller cam?

Just because it has tapped spider bosses doesn't mean it has/had a roller cam. Just about all truck 350's were flat tappet with that block.

Yes, what CorkyE said.

If you're roller cam shopping, yes, 87-98 would be your application. If you're planning on running a mechanical fuel pump, verify that the new cam has a fuel pump eccentric lobe (and that your 350 block has the provisions for a mech. pump, as I mentioned earlier).

A good article to read:

You can get the spider, dogbones and roller lifters used at the junkyard. Roller lifters do not have a wear pattern like flat tappet lifters, so if they're in good shape they can be re-used.

Roller cams use a specific timing chain, different from the flat tappet cams. This Chevrolet Performance one is a nice setup, I have it on my '87 305.
