I'm installing sound deadener in my 76 and thought it would be a simpler job if I removed the shifter. Here's a pic of the cable and shifter, can I remove this easy from the top side or do I need to unbolt it from underneath? If it's going to be difficult, I'd rather just trim the material out around it. What do you think?

Well the material I'm using is in one big sheet so I'd have to cut a long notch out for the cable. I suppose that doesn't really matter since it's under the carpet and won't be seen. I just thought it would be easier spraying and laying the material down in one piece.

Just lightly pry the clip I have circled on the left out, then remove the little clip at the end of the cable. After that you will be able to slide the cable out and move the shifter to the side.

To reinstall, just put the cable back in, install the end through the rod and apply the clip again, then apply the clip to the bracket and press/lightly hit it back into place.
