Thought the starter went out because this morning I got in it to go to work and bang. Big noise and the starter just spun.
Put a starter on it after work and it wouldn’t turn over at first. Then it cranked and sounds like a wrench tapping on a fender.
A touch low on antifreeze so I think it had a blown head gasket leaking a little water into a cylinder. Then it hydrauliced not letting it start. Then it bent a rod, allowing it to start but make the loud tap that gets louder as it revs.
Good oil pressure and no water into oil.

Great car in great shape but I may just sell it as is. Don’t know how much.

Makes me sick.

Did you take out the spark plugs BEFORE trying to start it? Is the starter still where it should be? Broken end housing?

I would think a head gasket that was leaking would result in white smoke out the exhaust pipe? Plus a definite miss? Or was the computer covering for those things?

Just some thoughts,

Might have busted a rod, GM used powdered metal rods in those 1st LS engines I am told. Sad to see that happen. Just get an early 5.3 and bore it out to the same as the 5.7 and add a new rotating assy. A little heavier on the nose of the car but you can drive it again.

I didn’t pull the plugs. I wss as just changing the starter. No big deal, so I thought.
Starter ear fell out when I pulled it.
