Just got a 1981 Camaro V8 305 and going through a tune up. Currently it runs with no issues but I’m doing the tune up for piece of mind.

My question is, can I place a new ignition distributor in the same position as the old one after marking it, without timing the engine?

I’ve researched and watched a bunch of videos on this topic but wanted to make sure before installing the ignition distributor. Appreciate any help that I can get.

Yes… IF you can drop it in position exactly where it was AND have the rotor in the same position.

Mark the distributor base in reference to the intake manifold, take the cap off and note the rotor position BEFORE you pull it out.

The rotor will turn as you take it out.

It will rotate back when you drop it in.

It also engages with the oil pump so it can be a bit tricky the first time you attempt this process.

Good Luck!

Hooking up a timing light is still a good idea, no matter what.

For easy reference bump the engine until the rotor points exactly towards the front of the engine and make reference where the distributor vacuum advance is.

Standing in front it’ll be at 6:00. When you remove the distributor the rotor will turn counterclockwise to around 4:00. When you drop in the distributor, hold the rotor at 4:00 and when it engages with the pump, it’ll swing clockwise to 6:00.
