I have some old HEI distributor out of a suburban, stock wires etc... I'm upgrading the whole ignition system. MSD has a nice kit that includes everything I'd need.

Would I be better off getting that kit? Piecing together and equivalent setup using Mallory? or other?

keep in mind I'd like to keep this round of mods to a decent budget. I'll spend money if needed but if it's not a huge difference I'd like to save a few bucks.

Thanks for the future replies

I like my MSD stuff, its by far the most popular ign box brand.

Is there a reason you need an ignition box? on a mild na motor it wont make hardly any difference other than look good.

A good condition GM HEI distributor , good coil and some nice wires will take you a LONG way performance wise.

my 2cents,

My motor wont always be mild. I'll either build it up more or put my 454 into it. I figured it wouldn't hurt and would think it'd make the car run smoother. Running higher compression I thought ut'd be a good idea.

"Running higher compression I thought ut'd be a good idea."

its like chicken soup, but unless you are over 12 to 1 , super charged or spraying it hard it wont make much difference. it may idle a tiny bit better in some cases.

Some of the added features ARE nice though, like start retard and pa retard , rev limiter ect.

You can always add a box down the road.

Im just playing devils advocate , ET wise it wont make a difference until you make some major mods. and is one more thing to go wrong.

Im just in cheapscape mode, if you have the money burning a hole in your pocket get it

:' )

Thanks for you .02

I may hold off on the box and get something else for the car instead.

I went the route of Mallory Uni Lite distributor, Mallory pro coil,MSD 6al box & MSD 8.8 wires..... So far so good & I did it all on the cheap. Bought it all off e-bay.... Mind you I was going to go the rote of the MSD package like your looking at but my buddy who built my motor told me to go with the uni lite so that's what I did...Have had no issues to date!

Had a Mallory Unilite using the Mallory resistor to drop the voltage to protect the extremely weak Unilite module and the Mallory coil. It did not last 3 runs.

The MSD Billet dist, 6al box has been in the car now 8 years and has NEVER missed a spark.

The Old used HEI I have that I installed an in cap Accel super coil still works well and it is over 20 years old.
