We were at a car cruise up in Detroit a couple yrs ago & some A$$ hat was rolling coal while people were sitting along the street watching the cars go by 🤬🤬🤬

We were driving on the other side of the road, not sure how I would've handled that if I'm sitting along the street. If he catches a red light near me, my chair mighta went thru his windshield. Couldn't believe he was doing that at a car cruise. 😡

DEF regulations came out in 2007, Obama didn't become president until 2009.
Doent matter when the registration was made. That's what all the diesel mechanics i work with call it. The newer diesels dont have problems with it, but the first generation of engines to use DPF/DEF were were constantly in the shop with DPF regeneration issues. Personally I have mixed feelings about it. I hate having to add it. It adds to the total cost of driving it. But it does work at eliminating the nasty black cloud of exhaust and the smell of a diesel. The VW bug had a really good diesel as well. Tons of torque, quiet, no black smoke and didn't use dpf or def. But it was cheating the emissions test and got them in a ton of trouble with the government. I personal would love to see a return to something like that now that some of those registrations are getting repealed

Yes, you live in Tennessee (as do I) where LEO do not give a flip about your exhaust. I had an office in Mill Valley, CA and it was a beautiful area, but the month or so every year that my wife and I spent there made me realize that what is considered the norm there is not what is considered the norm other places. The thing I heard the most to justify this was "you accept it so you can live in California". Well, there are beautiful places all over this country where you don't have to "accept it". Example: I bought strawberries in Mill Valley that were grown in Watsonville (about 100 miles apart), I also bought strawberries in Johnson City Tennessee that were grown in Watsonville (about 2500 miles apart), the same strawberries were less expensive in Johnson City. That is just crazy. Sorry to get off subject, but, I think it goes to the mentality of "you accept it to live in California" which goes to the mentality of "you are visiting California so you also have to accept it". I am sorry, I do not accept it.

Oh - I remember. I was running a fleet of ~150 commercial trucks at the time. I remember what hunks of crap the International 4300's were that were running without DEF. They ran those poor trucks so hot, everything failed. Combine that with International's Turbo actuator issues at the time... they actually made the Ford F650's look good, and that's sayin something. The DPF filters turned out to be kinda a non-issue once people learned not to ignore the re-gen alarms.

My understanding of the VW Diesel-gate was that they were ultimately trying to dodge the DEF consumption. Oddly, I had one of the TDI Golf's. I think I only put DEF in it once over the course of 2 years. Great little car.
