My 74 came with a space saver.
It is well beyond usable so I would like to put a full size spare in.
Having difficulty getting it back enough for the J bolt to come up thru the wheel, thus my question.

Thanks

Never mind, I can see where the traditional J hook mount would be, much lower.
I assume the assembly line had to choose depending on the option so they just cut off the regular mount for cars with the space saver option.

I ordered my '77LT with the Space Saver tire so I could have useable trunk space. Rather than having 1/2 of it used up by the normal-sized spare tire. NEAT watching it fold back up as it is deflated! But the real issue if getting the inflater cartridge refilled!

For a spare, you might consider finding a later-model "mini" spare tires, which is much thinner than the normal tire is. Would need to find one to match the diameter of your tires, though. Might find one at a salvage yard and then get a new tire on it from Discount Tire.

Correct, they have different hold down points between the Space Saver and the Full Size Spares. I usually only have the Space Saver, Jack & Tools in the trunks for show with the Canisters and all. (Which originals are hard to come by even just for show.)

I always carry a can of Fit-A-Flat in any of the classics. I only carry a spare on longer trips and I found a Volvo scissors Jack Kit in the bag in a junk yard to carry as well. As I would never use the Bumper Jack on one of my cars anymore.

But otherwise, I never carry a spare if I'm within 100 miles of home. But yeah the newer skinny mini spares may be a good option if you need to carry a spare.

Yes, my 1979 came with a stow-away spare, too. I was not impressed. I bought FIVE new tires several years later and tied the full-size spare to the other loop that you found.

What I figured out was a full sized spare (235/60/15) won’t fit underneath my 6x9 Infinity speaker that I never use because my engine sounds so good. I’ll try a skinnier tire someday when I’m done spending money on everything else.

It depends on the year of car ,The earlier ones had a full size spare ,Then they change to space saver spares to lose weight . And if the factories one wont work ,Just fabricate one that will,
