Had a few questions and looking for some advice for my 79 Z28 auto ... motor is definitely not stock looking

Questions:

Engine Code 14010207 (#s on pass side - 1259)
Head casting - 333882

1. - What can you tell me about the motor?
Original equip?
What is the stock comp ratio?

2. - 2 bolt/4 bolt? (without taking the oil pan off)

3. - Heads - What size valves? good heads for the build below?

Motor has Edlebrock 1406 - 600 CFM carb
Headman headers - true dual
Victor Jr intake
Bad cam (bad lobes - runs like crap)

Looking to change a few things as follows:

Comp Magnum 270H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft
Lift: .470''
Duration: 270°
RPM Range: 1800-5800

4. - Can i use the stock springs with this cam or need to change them out?

Swap out the victor jr (3500-8500RMPM range) with a Performer dual plane intake (1500 - 6000 Range)

Swapping out the stock BS gears in the rear (think they are like 2.56's ... with 3.73's -- will the new gears fit the pumpkin?

Any other suggestions?

I think going from 2.xx gears to 3.xx and up are a different carrier.
Could be mistaken though.
If its a dog, I'd suspect 3.08's they were pretty common.
If so, you're good to go.

Block is early to mid 80's & most were 2 bolt unless from a truck, then could be 4 bolt. Heads are low compression with small 1.94/1.5 valves. Here's a pretty good site to look at:

http://chevytech.com/

And like Air Adam said - stock gears will be 3.42 on a 79Z with auto trans.

BTW - that Victor Jr intake is a way big mismatch for those heads & carb. Probably really killing a bunch of low end torque.

Everyone sells the .470" lift cam that has the same lobe. Might as well buy it from Elgin, Sealed Power, or other generic parts makers ,, it'll be on a better core than Comp uses. Use the generic Z28 springs, available everywhere for about $25.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback ..

Is an understatement ... plus with the bad cam suprised the car can even run at all ..

Just bought the car - knew there were issues but have plans to get it right .. if I can get 300 HP from it I'll be happy enough ...

Replacing the front suspension in the next 2 weeks .. then the engine ... performer intake, 270 or 280 cam .. already has headman headers and Edelbrock carb (600 cfm).

Next - change the gears to 3.73s .. and new leaf springs.

No rush ... it was bought as a project car anyhow ...
