There's no reason to do the extra work of pulling the engine. I've pulled more transmissions than I can count without a lift. Get the car up as high as you can (safely) with jack stands and use a floor jack to lower the transmission.

It seems like there is no end to the expense of doing this. BowTie $100 Shiftworks $100, O'reilly torque converter $150, Jegs cross member$73, Harbor Freight jack $100. Who would like to buy a low mile th350 for $500?

That is all, Dave.

crossmember???

Granted at the spry age or 75 I'm not thinking your going to "benchpress" that th350 or the 200 in or out. What yr F-body you doing? as I'm curious about the cross member purchase. When I did my 81 BIRD I used the th350 xmember moved back 6 1/2" with new holes in the subframe.

In the gararge with 4 jack stands and a floor jack..... and about 30 yr younger ;)

I used 3 1/2 ton jacks to hold the car up high enough, and used a 2 ton jack to drop the trans in my 4th gen. I did it like this twice.

Supported only on the jacks.....sounds like a death wish to me...of course I vividly remember the last time I did that 35 years ago and had a '66 Chrysler Newport fall on my chest.....I'm only here by the grace of God...........

I will say, dropping a 4th gen tranny without benefit of a lift is a royal PITA....or I've just gotten too dang old....

When I way a lot younger (I'm 66), I changed automatic trans on a set of home built ramps that were 12' long, 10" wide and 18" on the top end. It was a PITA to do them on ramps but it can be done.

Later on I welded two (scrap steel) rims (per wheel) together that I then placed under each of the four wheels. that gave me a safe stable "home made jackstand" to be able to get under the car. I could put blocks under the rims to get it even higher!

ALWAYS WORK ON A LEVEL CONCRETE FLOOR! NEVER ON BLACK TOP OR WOOD OR INCLINED AREA!

About ten years ago, my wife bought me a 10,000# two post lift! OMG, we'd NEVER go back to working on ramps or rims again! It makes EVERY job (including transmission changes) much easier!
