I'm building a 350 and need some help. The specs on the motor are

69 Camaro 350, bored 30 0ver

TRW Forged pistons, 10 1/2 to1 ratio

Forged steel Crank

Heavy duty connecting rods (can't remember what mfr)

Crane "Saturday night special" cam. Think it was about .525 lift, 304 degrees Advertised duration, 244 degrees actual duration. (too much cam)

Motor is choked down right now with a set of heads from a base 62 corvette 327. Small ports, basically crap.

When I get done with this I plan on running an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and an Edelbrock 600CFM 1406 carb.

Questions: Do I have too small of a carb?

Would Vortec heads be the best head if I am money challenged?

What about World Products sportsman II type heads?

Thanks!

Chris

1st off, I personally think the 600 cfm will be a little small to make you smile. 2nd, remember if you chose the vortec style heads, you have to have a vortec bolt pattern intake as well which costs a little more than conventional style like you already have.

Next, what exactly are you wanting out of this motor? If it's a primarily street machine then a good set of cheaper aftermarker iron heads will build you good torque. Dart Iron Eagles or something equivalent will make it pull pretty strong, especially through the mid rpm range. You'd be much happier with a 650 or MAYBE even a 750 cfm carb to make that dog bark.

I'm wanting to build a weekend warrior that will see a test and tune at the strip once or twice a year.

Other posts here talked about clearance problems with Vortecs and anything over about .480 lift. I would like to get my .525 lift cam to work properly without blowing the bank. Thought about using stock 350 heads and having them machined but think that's a bad use of $.

Are the Dart heads really that good?

I Have access to a set of 350 heads off of a 72 Chevelle 350 4v and a set off of an 81 suburban.

I'm kind of convinced I need to put a decent set of heads on since the bottom end is so strong.

Thanks for the offer, though!!!

Mwilson, I'll get a number on the Vette heads tomorrow for you. They ran off of a Hollander Interchange manual to the low performance 327 in a 62 Vette.

Think I'm going to use the vette heads temporarily until my summer O.T. kicks in. I also had a neighbor give me another set of 350 heads off of an 81 4wd truck.

I'm leaning towards World Product sportsman II's come about August.

You're right, those early 327 heads are a choke point. I'd at least get a set of 305 HO heads, casting # 416. They flow about the same as the late '80s Corvette heads.
