On my 80, since i drive it everywhere and would like to feel a little safer leaving it parked, i am working on a place to mount some hidden switches, mainly right now for a kill switch. The two switches i have are 30amp 12v switch, would this be alright to use? I read on here you needed a 20a switch, didnt know if 30a would work too.

Also, Where is the best place to tap into the batt lead to the distributor without disturbing the factory wiring too much? Anything i do to my cars i like to be reversible if need be.

Switch i have

Just for the record, I had a hidden HEI kill switch in my '73 Z28 in high school. I guess it made a good theft deterrent, in that my car wasn't ever stolen. But the main use I had for it was sitting out on the Saturday night cruise. When the cops drove by and told me to move, I would crank the engine - no fire. Sorry Mr. Occifer, I don't know what's wrong with it - just does this sometimes. As soon as it will start, I'll get out of here...:p

I love it

How did you have yours wired up? or do you remember?

Most kids nowadays dont understand how cool it is to go downtown (since my city is one of the few who still has a nice, thriving downtown) or dairry queen or wherever and just chill, dont need to get liquor or drugs involved, hang out and be young, even though we are rapidly growing old. Im 19 and think i was born into the wrong time period.

Brother I'm with you there - I should have been born in 1940 so I would have been 17 in '57!!! I love oldies music, hot rods, and poodle skirts (well, the girls in the skirts i suppose - LOL!)

Anyhoo, my wireup was very basic - just spliced into the power lead to the HEI with a 12v auto switch from Radio Shack. Wired up under the dash. I didn't do the switch, but traced it down one day out of curiosity. Before I got the car, it had a magneto ignition which is why the kill switch was on it in the first place.

The other switch I had was equally cool. It killed every light on the car - brakes, side markers, signals, everything - except the headlights, and I could kill those with the headlight switch if necessary. Very nice for occasional getaways at night...

Another guy in my town ('76 Rally Sport) who was a lot older than me but still roamed the cruise regularly had something very, very interesting. He actually bought a new wiper fluid pump (the thing that sprays the wiper fluid on your windshield) and mounted it in his trunk rigged up to a bottle of gin with a long vaccum hose and a switch running to his front seat. No kidding. If I'm lie'n, I'm die'n !!!

He'd buy a small bottle of orange juice each night and keep it in a cup holder with 3-4 plastic cups. Pour some juice - squirt some gin - drink as he cruised. If any heat came close, he'd just dump the whole thing and start over. I have no idea if this is healthy (using a wiper pump?) and certainly do not condone drinking and driving. I'm just reporting the facts...

I would hook it up to GROUND OUT the tach lead. that way if it goes bad (open) your car will still run.
If it's in the supply wire to the hei you have a chance for line loss (less voltage to the coil)
