Have you ever driven a vehicle with a true 300 HP? 400? 500 HP in a 350 is NOT a streetable combination naturally aspirated, end of story.

What are your goals? Do you plan to race it or just have a street car? Do you plan to put very many miles on it?

I beg to differ with you about a 500hp 350 being streetable. freind of mine has a 3600lb Chevelle with a 350 drives it on the street every nice weekend, Puts slicks on, and runs low 10s all day long. Never overheats or anything. and 17 mpg!!

Beg all you like. 500 HP in natually aspirated form in a 350 is on the EXTREME RAGGED edge of sanity when it comes to streetability. 1.2 HP per cubic inch is riding that edge in naturally aspirated form. At 500 HP you've torn the envelope wide open at 1.42 HP per cube. By the way, have you ever seen your buddy's car run down the quarter mile? Ever seen a time slip? Or are you only going on his word? Everyone has 500 HP these days, or is shooting for this magical number. It just amazes me how many people want 500 HP in a little engine, and they want it streetable, and to have nice manners.

This 17 MPG you didn't mention if he has overdrive. I am sure he does. If it's so streetable, why doesn't he take it out on anything but "nice weekends"? That sounds like a fair weather driver to me, not a regular street car.

I can build a 500 HP naturally aspirated 350 engine that'll idle all day without overheating, work with A/C, P/S, etc. With EFI it's not really that hard to do.

You are correct though, many do not have the power they think they do. 500 HP in a 350 does require some decent parts.

From your profile and name I will assume you are not looking to spend a huge amount of $$ to make that 500 hp. I will try to point out some things that will effect your bottom line. Monza and Cam are right it can be done, but I will assure you it is not cheap. How fast you go is directly representative of 2 main things; $$ and ability/knowledge or friends a/k. 500 hp out of a 350 will cost you no less than $3k if you are really lucky. Do not expect street manners. I spent 5 years and another $5k getting all the support systems to handle what I thought was that magic 500, in reality is 450. She is streetable for around town not long-distance.

The reason My freind takes his car out only on nice weekends is because we live up here in the lovely northwest where it RAINS most of the time. Its not alot of fun laying on your back detailing the underside of the car after driving in the rain. I have seen time slips and have watched him race. These days it pretty easy to get 500 out of a 350 and be streetable. They were getting 1 hp per cubic inch in 1957. You mean to tell me that after almost 50 years of progress that 1.2 hp per cubic inch is hard to get?? you can go on ebay and buy 450 hp small blocks for under $5000.

Im guessing i have 450 at the flywheel and i love to drive it on the street but i wouldn't want to make a long road trip or even cross the town i live in at rush hour, now it has never over heated but it just doesn't seem practical.
