Like cardinal said, but

Another quick way to check is to jack the car in the rear. Get your vavle steam @ the 12:00 position. (using as a marker) Put a mark on your driveshaft, and count the revolutions compared to each other. 3 turns of the drive shaft for one turn of the tire = 3.08 or so. 3.5 turns = 3.55's.
It's an easy trick, and works everytime.

Remeber if it is a non posi it will not work out right doing the ol count the drive shaft. Best bet is to pull the cover. Oil pry needs changed anyway.

Thanks for you input andymiller. Good advise. What kind of HP can I resonable expect from the 327. The Dyno that I found in the glove box on the car showed a dyno done before tune up and after. 246HP before tune up and 273HP after. The 273HP is the High of the three after the tune up. Something just does not seem right with this engine. I think it needs to be tore down and build again. I am look for at least 400HP. Maybe a trip to our local strip to run on sundays. I would like a low 12 second car.

273 rwhp is very good for a mild 327, equating to about 340 crank hp. The 268HE cam is 218°/218° @ .05" and is excellent for a heavier car.
If you want 400 hp you're going to have to do some work. Have you contacted the original builder for information on the engine?

+1. 273 rwhp is pretty impressive! That should put you well into the low 13's with the right gears and stall.

There is no way this car is going to pull low 13. I would'nt race my Honda accord right now. I am going to check the gears. Needs to be done regardless if I change out the engine. I will bet that it has stock gears. I can do 75 on the highway at 3K. Also I have a bad lifter, spring or something ( bad knock ). This just happened. Oil pressure reads 18 to 20 psi at low idle and 40 psi on the freeway. I got a smoken deal on the car, but I want to be a good stewart of the money being spent on the car. Tranny was just gone through, shift kit, and 2300 stall.

If you get under the car and spin the driveshaft it'll still work.

I have a mild 327 in my 70 and 2.73's in the back (with a 4 spd tho) and I can tell you that it won't win any awards for being quick off the line. You get it rolling tho and it won't quit pulling! Check your whole setup out, performance is in matching your components. I can't wait for a new set of gears, it's going to wake up my 327 big time. You may be in a similar situation. Good luck.

All you need to do with an open rear end is hold one wheel still and turn the other one 2 turns while you count the turns of the driveshaft.

Yes that engine made good power for what it was. If you want to change it anyways then build the 383. Case in point, had a 327, big solid cam, ported bowtie heads, 4500 stall, 4.88 gears, G60x14 tires, 11.9:1 compression to a best of 12.7 at 110. Used the same cam and heads, changed to 3.42 gears on a lower compression 406, same converter (that flashed over 5000 now) ran 12 teens the first night out and was tuned to high 11's. Build the bigger engine and leave the 327's for the resto guys. Big torque and mild gears are way better than high RPMs and no torque, esp. in our heavy cars.
