When you install a new cam and lifters, is there a break in period where you have to run the engine for a certin amount of time? If so, what happens if you dont do it?

Rollers don't really require a break in. Flat's are supposed to have a 20 min break in. The supposed consequences of not doing a proper break in is wiping the lobes or ruining lifters. I'm sure some have gotten away without a proper break in, but I prefer to follow the "rules" on flat tappets. This issue has been hashed and thrashed, do a search and you'll find some pretty good reading.

Make sure you get the GM oil additive or use Rotella oil (if you're working with a flat tappet cam/lifters) since they no longer put the zinc or other useful additives in standard oil. It's a good idea to use the Rotella after break-in, but these days it's just about critical.
