i think i need a new one. engine will not turn over enough to start. found loose wire on starter, tightened still no good. son cranked while i looked at flywheel. it started turning then stopped. tried again, no turning just funny noise coming from starter. i have a 72 with a 396. battery is charged, new alternator. newer battery cables also. so pissed such a nice weekend here in chicago area and cant drive. any suggestions for a fairly inexpensive starter? i did install a new vacuum advance canister and played with the timing. could i have done something wrong there? thanks for any and all advise. car also has ford solenoid mounted and hooked up to battery, starter. dave

If you advanced the timing too much the starter can't turn the engine anymore because you could have a cylinder firing before it reaches top dead center and that will stall the starter.

you would have to have the timing pretty advanced to not start an engine.

I would first bring the timing back just a tad, then try and start. See if that is the issue first.

What kind of compresson are you running in the 396? The stock starter is usually good to about 9.5:1, after that it can get a little slow.

Incase you don't want to start off changing the timing for the TOO advanced test, Pull the Coil wire and crank. If its a HEI unplug the BAT etc wiring at the cap and crank. That eliminates the cylinders from firing.
Normally a slow cranking is a weak starter, weak battery or weak cables / connections.
100% the connections. Even moving the ground straight to the block or head instead of the ALT bracket. Scrape that paint away and clean the threads of the bolt and bolt hole.

Try a jumper cables to a running vehicle to eliminate a weak battery.
Last is a toasted starter.
The Starter is of the Hi-Torque design and all Chevy V8 starters for the 153 tool flywheel will bolt up. The HT Starter has a 3/16" dia by 1" long copper spacer from the solenoid to the starter. It is the most common starter.
Its the same starter used on the 12.5:1 ZL-1 427's and most every other V8 Chevy.
