You're on the road and you break down. Can't fix the car so you have to push it. You pop the tranny in neutral and start to push. Will the mileage on the odometer increase?

The mechanical speedometer is geared off the transmission output shaft.
If the driveshaft is connected to the transmission and axle while the tires are moving...speedometer cable will turn.

Even on a treadmill going nowhere... The mileage will increase. ;)

Unless you remove the driveshaft, the transmission output shaft will turn. As mentioned, the odometer is direct-geared to the output shaft.
