Im in need of a set of rods and a 4340 crank. Ive been told to stay away from eagle and scat stuff. They are both been know to be machined out of round bad dimensions etc. Now Ive have looked at some other compaines out there through ebay that is, cat, ohio, summit, h-beam rods and cranks. They all look the same, I find it hard to believe its all manufactued by different companies but just a name change. Can some of you who have purchased or are presently using these particular products chime in here. $330 hbeam, and $400 cranks are starting to look extreamly good.
Also are there any clearence issues (rods to block) using 6 inch hbeams with a standard 3.48 stroke?
thanks!

Your odds of having excellent luck with a set of Scat rods and crank is about 99.9%. The issues we have seen with Eagle are in the rod big ends being out of spec. Sent a whole case back early in the summer.

With any bottom end components though you want to verify all the specs as well as balance.

Most all the low cost cranks and rods do originate from China. Scat does as well, although they own the forge. The raw castings are then shipped to CA and final machining is done in the US.

As much as I hate to buy stuff from overseas it's hard to argue with the quality you get from Scat.

Im happy as scat, with scat parts.
$170, new scat, balanced rods with ARP waveloc bolts
Can't buy bolts and rework old stock rods and make them better for that same money.

cast crank checked dead on for size, roundness and straightness. All clearences were as the specs stated.

cat is a big no no.. Non of thier junk is worth the metal its made from..

eagle has had probs with the machining specs.

scat is pretty darn good, and the only cheaper parts thats finished machined here in the usa.

I use scat cranks and rods all the time in my builds.

My engine has a scat 9000 cast crank in it.. No a single prob with it. journals mic'ed out good, blanance was good, ect.

Like mentioned, Scat makes some fine pieces. They make everything from low end ductile iron cranks, to top shelf ultra light cranks tolerant of 1000+HP SBC. Machining tolerances are like Rick said,, no problems that I have EVER heard of. Eagle on the other hand, I can tell you from first hand that the final machining on the eagle cranks 'can' be total CRAP!!! The Scat rods seem to be pretty decent, but I've never seen any real high end rod from them.

As far as CAT,, run, don't walk, RUN as far away from that junk as possible.

Summit house brand parts are made by who ever gives the lowest bid. You never know who's making their stuff. Summit will stand behind the part if it breaks and replace it,,,, but not the damage it may cause. Choose wisely!

Cola cranks used to be a damn fine crank. The place has been closed, re-opened, closed, re-opened so many times over the last 4-5 years,, I really don't know much about what's going on. But Their prices were pretty decent for you got. Chet and Doug Herbert still has a stock of Cola cranks, worth giving them a call.

Ohio Crank,, don't know much about them other than they are gaining popularity. I'm hearing more and more guys running their stuff, as well as Howards rods and cranks.

I got an eagle steel crank from a friend of mine (engine builder) for half of what they sold for in summit but before I handed him any money I took it to my machineist and had him mic every surface and measure every thing. and everything checked out great I guess I was lucky but I have heard its like a coin toss when dealing with eagle half are good half are bad.
