So I got a wild hair up my a$$ this weekend since I was going to be given a free counter top to use in the garage, so I started at 8am til around 5pm clearing out a corner where I had a 4 shelf setup, emptied and moved it out of the way to paint the wall behind it. As I was setting everything back up as a work bench, I was debating on keeping some paints and reducers and clear and so on provided by the previous owner for the car.

The paint has been in the garage since I got the car and never moved or opened. Just moving the cans around while I was cleaning and reorganizing you could smell the paint/chemicals.. there were no leaks, but curious on the shelf life of paint?

It is this brand for everything..

Its not a color im planning on using, but if its still usable, wasn't going to toss it and use it to practice... but if its already past its shelf life, then I don't want to try to spray it on a new spray gun when I get one.

Can anyone tell me if I can use it still or have it recycled?

thanks.

So how many years has it been? If it has never been opened, I'd think I'd use it within 5-15 years. Depends on if it's alky/solvent based paint.

There should be a stamp/lot number on it that should be traceable to the date it was manufactured.

Ill check for date/codes on the cans..
Ive had them since I got the car in 2010, put it all on the garage shelf.

If they are good, that's what ill be using to practice painting with so that I don't waste good paint..

I'm not sure on paint an clear coat but reducers an catalyst don't last long at all once they have been opened, exposed to air. Even when not opened they have a short shelf life.

like Dogwater said the paint will last a long time if its sealed good, the clear will to but the hardener want last as long. when it comes time to practice open the can and if its still liquid its good if its not chunk it.

That is the code on the "Economy Thinner" (FT220)

R00815304H09
R2319 3676
That is the code on the "Medium Hardener" (FH612)

Both are "Acme" Finish 1 Products.

I've sprayed a lot of that clear. If it still looks clear,is not cloudy and has not thickened I would spray it. Sherwin williams carries finish 1 products. I have never seen it in the round gallon cans, all I have seen is in a rectangular gallon cans. You can get a gallon kit (clear&hardener} for around $90 at SW. It lays out nice and if you cut&buff it it looks really good. Its the only cheap clear I use.
