Interesting post.... My quick thoughts.

The public school system sucks. It's horribly inefficient and wastes a lot of money on just a few bad apples while the good kids get screwed.

If school was privatized and the gvoernment mailed parents a $3000 check every six months to send their kid to private school, many people would use that money on something else and again, the kids would get screwed just because Mommy & Daddy needed a flat screen TV.

I dont know what the solution is - I only know that the system is broken like the healthcare system and while us scamps bitch and moan about it amongst ourselves, very few in power have the balls to step forward to talk about it and push for actual change.

Discipline.
Respect,
Taught to learn.
More 3-R's in elementary
No automatic advances without learning the 3-R's
PC is FORBIDDEN,, no not the IBM clones, Political Correctness.

When a kid is taught to learn, learning becomes easier, more enjoyable and the new information is interesting. Interested students are great sponges and have fewer social and behavior problems.

Next we address the lazy tenured teachers who must commit mass murder of students to even get a repremand. If the teach sux, go pick apples, and stay off the taxpayers dime.

Then make it a 100% tax write off. You send in your receipt at tax time and they deduct the 3K from your taxes (or give you that much more of a refund). OR, you have it taken out of your check, just like your 401K.

That will never happen though...It's not fair if I went to school (on loans), got a job, and worked hard so that my kids could live in a nice town with a nice school district. Nope, it's not fair to those welfare kids.

That's why this is such a GREAT idea!

+1 Especially on the PC thing! How are kids supposed to learn if they are never allowed to fail??

Ah.....are you confusing the fact that kids admire strength and being good at something ???
Kids DO admire a stronger athlete because secretly we all want to be that big athlete. :)
I see where you're going with it though.....but does the Positive outweigh the negative here or vice versa ??

food for thought.....goin to bed now....it's 9am...droolin over here.

I agree with what you saying and tried to make that some point....I guess I didn't do a very good job of it...:shy:

I think sports should still exist, just not at school. If you take that out of school, then the strong leader will be the intelligent kids. It's human nature to be competitive. If the only thing you can be competitive in is intelligence, then everyone would excel to be intelligent.

Keep sports, but privatize them. Which is happening in Dallas already. You can play almost any sport at "clubs" in Dallas. I know you can play Soccer, Baseball, Swimming, and Basketball at "clubs", it's probably a matter of time before you can play football. These are considered "Select" leagues. The best kids play in them.

If you take school sports away, the select leagues will be there to take their place.

That's where the voucher system works. The government sends the money to the school you chose to send your child to. Heck I'd be happy if the tuition I pay was tax deductible. Not only do I get to pay for private education, I get to pay for the public school system I refuse to use.

Voted military just for the fact i seen so many people change before my eyes going through basic that alot of kids now days could use some disipline (sp?). I know it mainly the parents fault, they let the tv and other such things raise their child. I know its not their fault working all the time but some people have to realize what they can afford and not have to work 80 hours a week to meet ends.

If it wasnt for the disipline (sp?) factor and these kids were anything like my class was where we all got along with everyone no fights or shootings or any of that non sense then i would be all about leaving it the same but i know big inner city schools are nothing like a small town like mine was.

About the only insight i have is my g/f is going to school to become and teacher but she is sticking to elementary so alot of this she probably wont see.

I would love the voucher system, but I pay taxes and pay tuition for private schooling.

The only thing is that if my kids continue to attend this school, they will go to the 4 year university for free. So instead of coming up with 100 grand times two kids all at once, I get to make installments over the next several years. My 10 year old has brought home A honor roll certs from when they start handing them out in the first semester of first grade till now, and my 6 year old has her first already also...I'm very proud of how my kids are doing!
Check out my 10 yr old's this year:
Study Skills - 102%
Bible - 100%
Math - 98%
English - 99%
Reading - 98%
Spelling - 100%
Social Studies - 100%

I know that here locally our parish(county) went with school uniforms. Well, more of a matching dress program. I thought it was a horrible idea at the time and was totally against it. But I gotta say that performance levels went WAY up across the board in ALL of the schools. And maybe the student's attitudes improved also. At any rate. It seamed like the pants hangin off the ass went out of style quickly. And I think it broke up some of the financial stereotypes at school. Rich kids don't look as rich-poor kids don't look as poor. I think the move was for the best of the kids. And that is where the focus should be..Johnny
