i am currently in the middle of putting a 5 speed in my 79 camaro and the shifter comes up under the dash and that is clearly not going to work. so what i am wanting to do is make a remote shifter mechanism that mounts where the original auto shifter did. I also want to possible keep the original center console with little modifications. so have any of you done this or have a good idea as to how i should go about making something like this?

What transmission are you using? Heres a picture of a T5 in my '78. It was also an auto to manual conversion and is using an automatic console. The shifter is in neutral in this shot. The shifter sits back about 2 inches and is centered on the tranny as compared to a stock 4-speed car.

Thanks for the heads-up, Mr. Hanson.
Tyler, I'd seriously rethink that tranny. Its gonna have stump-pullin' first gear. It's going to be crazy low. And you'll have to do more too get it to work than just putting in a T5. If you're not going to be gear-headin' the car a lot ,a world class T5 will be fine. Mine has been in my car for 20 years. They're cheap and pretty easy to find. Just my opinion.

And yes, you easily re-use your existing console with a little modding. Just make a plate to cover the hole.

My basic idea is to make this trans work for now. I'm extremely tight on money and I can afford to go with anything else. Also I don't care if this thing flies right now, everything can be changed later on. So nobody has any good info on relocating the shifter?

here is the info on his trans, including a note about the forward shifter issue: http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=253940

IIRC Todd and/or Woody made extensions for their t56 shifters. But I have no idea if t5hose ideas transpose to the truck trans you are working wroth.

Since the OP is trying to put a truck trans in a Camaro, has already said the shifter would wind up in a good spot (now it doesn't), maybe its time to listen to what people are suggesting...

That is, he's not going to get what he wants from this trans, and at the very least, shouldn't butcher the trans tunnel to find out...
