Take the side cover off and the gear angle should look like this.

If you have never seen the gears side by side it is hard to discern what you have from a picture of just a M22, so here they are side by side.

Definitely came from the factory as an M22 in that case. As mentioned, you could always remove the side cover to see what it looks like after almost 53 years. According to this site only 767 sold.

Wow that’s great news. I have no reason to doubt the original owner. But the confirmation is great.
Verify that the vin stamped on the case matches yours as it can be an m22 but out of another car. The vin # stamping will confirm it’s the original part

Take it for a drive and you’ll know, who knows whether someone that didn’t like the whine swapped it for a M20 or M21.

Here’s mine. I swapped out my M20 gears for GM M22 gears back in 1981.


Dang... I miss that sound. Downshifting was always as much fun as accelerating because of the M22 sound!

The 2 next to the P, is 1972. The next letters are the month and day. The C is a M22. If there were a B, that would be M21, and A would be an M20. Ideally, you would need a 3:73 rear end or higher to get the best out of the M22. The number above it looks like the VIN. Looks original.
