I'm want'n to put an 8-point roll cage in my 79' and I'm looking for your opinions. I also have some questions... Who made yours? How much was it? What type / size tubing was it made from? Did it affect your doors in any way? Were there any other interior issues? Just how much did it stiffen up your ride? Any other helpful info?

Thanks Y'all :)

i got my kit from comp engineering, its a 10 point. i had a friend tig it in and re bent some of the bars. mine go through the dash (which you wont have to worry about with a 8pt), he bent the main hoop and overhead to be a little closer to the roof, and rebent the rear bars that go into the trunk so that they follow the contour of the car, rather then go straight through the rear seat. i think i paid about 400 bucks for the kit. as far as modifying the interior, my doors are fine,i had to notch the rear "door panels" ( i cant think of a better name now), the panels with the armrest for the rear seat. just the corners for the main hoop. hole saw holes through my rear shelf and dashboard. it deff. tightened up the chassis. i was jacking the car up on the passenger side to change that front tire and it lifted both front tires off the ground. which it never did before.

My opinion

If it were me, especially if cost were an issue, I would try to use a pre-made one, and then have that welded in. The competition engineering one is pretty good, and part # CEE-3121 is the one made for our cars. It's $159.

The only modification I would suggest to the kit (or whatever you get) is to make the sides removable bars (swingouts). This way if you are driving it during the week you are not climbing over the darn thing each time (it gets old real fast). Also, get some padding, the bare bar looks cool, but once you hit your head a few times, it's not. That's also at least a little safety precaution when you are driving on the street and not wearing a helmet.

It stiffens up the ride drastically, even a little 4 point is an astounding improvement in stiffness. Your 8 point will feel quite stiff.

I would just follow the specs for NHRA, etc. If you have the money, and really want to save the few pounds (ok, maybe 40 lbs or more), get the chromemoly. It's a little thinner, so there's a little more cockpit space, or if you are building something for show. It's not for me, just plain steel is fine.

Good luck.

the competition engineering 8 point was the biggets peice of crap i've ever seen, because the main hoop was plain too wide for the car at the bottom, they didn't bend it enough. i had to rebend the hoop, and was so disgusted i haven't bought a single CE part since nor will i ever.

Hmmm....competition is usually fair...

..I figured due to factory tolerances a friend once had a hoop that was too big. We called, and they shipped us another free of charge which fit perfectly.
