I used to use a tap. Screwed that inwards and once it bottomed, keep twisting and it pulled the pilot bushing right out.
Been using this method for many years, I substitute the tap for a fine thread 3/4 in. bolt , the one that comes with a steering wheel puller works fine, no mess involved and you can save the bread for a sandwich.

if I recall…I think some newer engine cranks I have seen are drilled to lighten and have a freeze plug in the back. I probably would look before I tried the tap and screw trick.

Yeah...lol Just replaced the pilot BUSHING on my TA. It was SO jacked-up I was using an old input shaft and really good wheel bearing grease and got NOTHING! (except grease spit at me). Then I recalled...🙄:brightide

WOW...worked like a charm!!! Seems weird shoving a piece of bread in the hole...but I can 100% confirm. Works per design...ish....lol

TY Biker!!
I have found that Sourdough works better than Multi-grain! LOL
Big up side is the clean-up. :brightide

The way *I* have always taken out Bronze pilot bushings was to pack them with the old thick drum type wheel bearing grease, then used a wooden dowel that *just barely* fits in the center, then hit it with a hammer! They all came out, no problem.''

Since I always replaced them with well-greased needle bearings I have never had to take THEM out, but I think a "lifter removal tool" (the little slide-hammer type) would do it for them. You're going to destroy it but it doesn't matter.

I never had any old input shafts and didn't think a clutch alignment tool would work (I have them too)...

I love the bread trick but I have never had the chance to try it yet. When I saw the title of this thread I thought somebody is finally going to use a peanut butter sandwich. LOL. I bet it would work too.
