Starter alignment

I have a 71 Z28, manual trans.
I bought a 96 Chevy Tahoe mini-starter. From reading threads here and the directions it said it should not need shims. I put it on and it needed something!
I shimmed it with a 0.060 shim and it is still grinding It has nicked the teeth of the new starter and a few on my flywheel ring.
I will add a larger shim but was wondering how to check the alignment without hacking my flywheel or the starter.

without pulling the bell housing. I can remove the trans inspection cover easy enough. But how do I get the starter to push out the gear without hitting it with 12 volts (while mounted).

what type of trans are you running? im going through the same issue with my lt1 t56..ill be watching for updates.. i pulled the whole trans and using a mini flathead to pull it out

I have the original Muncie. I am just trying to figure out is there is low voltage or something that will push out the bendix without turning it. Or something like that. I could pry it out but not when it is mounted.

also 168 tooth gear ring, and offset bolt pattern on starter.
From I see looking at various GM starters they all seem to be compatible with 153 tooth or 168 tooth. I can't remember how many teeth are on the starter gear, but I did compare with old starter and they have the same (10?).
Maybe I am starting to figure it out by doing a little thinking If I just leave the 12v to the solenoid it should push out the bendix, if the big battery cable is not connected it should not spin the starter.
Am I correct?

Are you using the correct starter bolts?
Buy some new bolts for a 98 Tahoe.
They are shorter by about an 1/8" vs the full size staters' bolts.

I do need to try new bolts. Only 1 is a true starter bolt with the shoulder that reaches the block.

we had put on a mini proform Junk... I put the mini rebuilt I had on bench Fired up no shimming nothing works perfect,,, My bud just bought Power master I think it was from summit for his 327 It works great as well..

To answer your question, use a screw driver and wedge the gear out and forward , it will come out freely...

Ran into a deal on my son's truck. Newer truck with an old 350. Turns out there are metric starters and the older SAE type, just slightly different but they don't interchange very well. Might be what you're into with the new starter on the old mill?
